Cheat:
You must join the thieves guild for this to work. When you're in between missions and have to fence a certain amount of gold, take your stolen item to any fence.
Sell it and then buy it again. After you buy it back it will not count as a stolen item and you can sell it to any merchant.
Note: when you buy it back it might cost more than you sold it for.
