After being teased earlier this month, the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 multiplayer reveal has finally hit the internet. Showcasing what looks to be an all-new aesthetic, some interesting new technology to play around with, and a whole-hearted dedicated to near-future warfare, Black Ops 2 looks more like a future Ghost Recon than Future Soldier ever did. Although the core gameplay appears to be completely intact, there seem to be a few new tools and gadgets at players’ disposal, so things may be considerably different this time around. Check it out for yourself after the jump.
Immediately, it’s quite apparent that Treyarch does not want Black Ops 2 to look like a simple re-skin of Modern Warfare 3. There are definitely some familiarities in the overall presentation and layout of things, but the brand new art style and neat future-tech aesthetic make it a surprising change in a series that usually sticks very closely to its guns. The lighting model also appears to have received an overhaul, with some very notable differences in HDR lighting and soft-shadowing that make the overall look of the game noticeably better than its predecessors.
It’s quite likely that nobody saw this coming, but Treyarch really seems to have slipped into the Call of Duty franchise quite elegantly since its first try with Call of Duty 3 way back when. Ever since, the developer has tried to do things differently than Infinity Ward, to the joy or chagrin of some fans of the franchise. Now, however, it appears that Treyarch has finally nailed what appears to be the perfect balance between change and familiarity with Black Ops 2, and while we may not know how the differences in player experience will pan out, it definitely looks as if the once second-rate developer is coming into its own with Black Ops 2. If you’re a fan of Call of Duty, or have recently left the series due to stagnation or boredom, this may very well be the game to bring you back to duty.
