Whatever reaction Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is stirring up in the gaming community, you just can’t argue with the numbers. Today Activision announced that a total of 6.5 million copies of the game were sold in the United States and the United Kingdom alone, in the first 24 hours of its release. These sales were worth a total over $400 million.
The numbers also easily beat records previously set by Call of Duty titles – Call of Duty: Black Ops first day sales were worth an estimated $360 million and Modern Warfare 2 managed $310 million in sales in its first 24 hours on store shelves.
Strangely enough, shares of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (stock ticker ATVI) have dropped from a high of around $14.20 on 8 November (the day Modern Warfare 3 was released) to approximately $12.83 at the time of this post. Looks like the smart money got in before the game’s release and have continued to sell the stock to latecomers since.
